though must they compete?

  1. I know this isn't your sort of music but you're missing the point.
just because the divide between pop and pretension is so stark in the US it doesn't mean you can't marvel at the fact that a man has found a common musical thread between the top 25 songs from 2009. and then edited them to make another song (fine it does sound pretty familiar, but I guess it would). and then edit a video to do the same. It shows a master of his craft. and presents a pretty damning statement about the state of musical tastes. But paints in the process some pretty well crafted pop.
I once reneged against someone that liked steps, claiming that they should listen to OK Comupter; that what they called music should be played only with the mute button firmly on. But I think I have since come to realise the naivety of what I had to say. Whilst it may not be to my preference, there is certainly something you have to admire in the song-writers craft, who can produce a 3-min nugget of melodic goodness that reaches out and draws the listener in, in every hook, and every move. Smashing Pumpkins 'today' is every bit platic as Rihanna's 'Umbrella' yet every bit as devestating. I find Lady Gaga miserably plastic, and would spend as little time as I can listening to her. Add with her probably every other name from that list of 20 others who sing the 25 tracks from this. But somehow I am incredibly impressed by this. It's mostly the fact that our attention is drawn to the fact that the music takes on simmilar keys, structure and chord progression, but it still takes some effort to make music. In this vein some bad bootlegs have been made. (like Danger Mouse's pretty average mashup of Jay-z's Black album with the beatles white album) and some good ones have also been made.
(like Dean Gray's reworking of Greenday idiot http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEGcz6KYxcM)

anyway. I should stop. I'm not trying to make you like it. It's not something that's on 'heavy rotation' here. And mashups are quite 2001 I know. I just thought I would explain a bit about why its on here.

    Now you.
